INNOVATION CORNER

Description

The light bulb transformed human life by extending productive hours beyond daylight. Although several inventors experimented with electric lighting, Thomas Edison developed a practical and long-lasting incandescent bulb in 1879. The bulb worked by passing electricity through a thin filament, heating it until it glowed. Later developments introduced fluorescent and LED bulbs, which are far more energy-efficient. Electric lighting replaced candles and oil lamps, improving safety and reducing fire hazards. It enabled nighttime work, illuminated streets, and supported industrial growth.

Why It Was Invented

Society needed safer and brighter alternatives to candles and gas lamps for homes and factories.

Today’s Impact

Electric lighting powers cities, industries, and homes worldwide.

Fun Facts

  • Edison tested thousands of filament materials.

  • LED bulbs use much less electricity than old bulbs.
